The struggles in the South Pacific continue. Hunnicutt has been promoted to Squadron Commodore and there are more men and ships to fight the war with and to try to bring safely through

USS Truxtun Hunnicutt Volume 2 William Kaufman 9781505838633 Books

I read the first book in the series (Treble), and looked forward to Truxton. Unfortunately, the latter book is not nearly as good. First off, the book reads like a disjointed series of after-action reports instead of a novel. The author need to flesh-out the characters and include more inter-character activity.

Secondly, there are sections of the book he accidentally left out. The book mentions the loss of two American ships, Strong and Gwin, but gives NO details on their loss. Strange.

If the author corrects these two issues, Truxton will be a novel worth reading. But not until then.

USS Truxtun Hunnicutt Volume 2 William Kaufman 9781505838633 Books Reviews

This novel continues where USS Preble left off and Hunnicutt is in charge of a group of destroyers. The battle scenes are good, but since Hunnicutt is more senior he is not directly involved with the workings of a ship and the action sequences are not as exciting. It is still an enjoyable book of WII Naval History and worth reading as a follow on to USS Preble. One quibble on the formatting - too much white space between every paragraph.
This was not as tightly and carefully written as Preble. I hope the next volume in the series is better.
Unlike his previous book there's not a whole lot of action,Sweets spent most of his time on the port bridge wing.
This account is written from the the interesting perspective of a Destroyer Squadron Commander during World War II, Pacific Theater. Mostly it's about his day to day naval routine. As a squadron commander, he really fulfills more of an admin roll, with more senior officers deciding strategy and making most important decisions. Very rarely does the squadron operate independently and solely under his authority. Well worth reading because it's unlike any war time naval historical I've ever read.
There was much more strategy in the Destroyer Division than most people knew. I always thought the Admirals on the Carriers and Battleships gave an order and the Destroyers followed it. No, there were too many different defences for one Admiral to know ,thus the Commodore in charge of the Destroyer Division.
The Commodore's persomal life added to the book, but not enough to derail it.
I have enjoyed both Hunnicutt books and I hope the author continues to write them. I liked the way historical events and battles were relayed to the reader in a way that was simple but exciting at the same time. The reader is exposed to all aspects of the naval war in the South Pacific during WW2 The battle scenes were well described without too much repetition and I enjoyed the different characters.

William! do your self a favour and check the spelling of Sydney (Australia)
I enjoyed this very much. The charm of USS Preble was the detailed description of the destroyer and its crew, down to telling us all about the oil king. This was unusual, as it told the story of the Solomons campaign from the perspective of a flotilla leader, as opposed to a ship's officer or captain. So, the tension of day-to-day decision making wasn't quite there. However, it is clear that the author knows destroyers, and that is the value of the tale. One small cavil There is no such thing as a "pinochle board". If two guys were playing cards with a board, then the game was cribbage.
