Nobody Gets the Girl A Superhero Novel WHOOSH! BAM! POW! Book 1 eBook James Maxey

Richard Rogers is a pretty normal guy living a pretty normal life in a mostly normal world (except for the giant dome cities that’ve started to spring up and the terrorist attacks by a giant robot baby with a gun for a head). He is living with a wife he’s not sure he loves and spending his nights off doing stand-up in comedy clubs. And then one morning, he wakes up and finds out that new people are living in his house, no one can see or hear him, and his family doesn’t remember him anymore.

But wait — one person can see him — Dr. Knowbokov, a benevolent mad scientist who, while on a trip into the past to battle his archenemy Rex Monday, accidentally erased Richard from existence. To make up for that error, Knowbokov brings Richard to his HQ on a tropical island paradise, introduces him to his beautiful, superpowered daughters, dubs him “Nobody,” and sends him out to fight supervillains.

Well, you know Richard couldn’t have it that good, right? Sure, Rex Monday is a psychotic loon who employs other psychotic loons to casually murder thousands of innocent people. But Knowbokov is no angel either — he kidnaps death-row prisoners to use them as brain-drained biocomputers, and he’s completely indifferent to anything that doesn’t involve him killing Rex Monday, including ordering Richard to allow a school bus full of children to be killed rather than deviate from a mission.

And his daughters have plenty of problems, too. The Thrill is a world-famous celebrity who can fly and get anyone to do what she wants just by asking, but she’s an unapologetic thief — she can ask for anything, and the owner will just hand it over. And Rail Blade, a metal manipulator who can pull knives out of thin air and roller-skate anywhere she wants in a matter of minutes, has some serious mental stability issues.

And Richard is, frankly, over his head. Sure, he’s invisible, but because he’s been displaced in time, he basically doesn’t exist unless someone believes he’s there. That makes it hard for him to do very much to help out. What’s a see-through man to do in a shades-of-gray world?

The book has very well done characters — even when you don’t agree with what they’re doing, you understand why they’re doing it. I also dug the moral quandries Richard has to deal with — Knowbokov and Rex Monday are both ruthless authoritarian bastiches, so who does Richard choose to work with? Can he find a third way out of the situation?

And the superhero action is great, too. The fights are frantic but well planned-out, and the violence is as terrifying as you’d expect from people who can do such outlandish things.

Really, my only complaint is that there aren’t enough superheroes and villains — just one group of each — and the ones we saw were enough fun that I wanted to see what other characters Maxey could create.

Nobody Gets the Girl A Superhero Novel WHOOSH! BAM! POW! Book 1 eBook James Maxey Reviews

I don't give many 5 stars, especially for fun fiction. I think this is one of the best books in the superhero genre I have read. Its only par I know is Confessions of D-Lister by Jim Butcher. I cant wait to read other works by Mr. Maxey. This book was original in a completely subtle and exciting. His characters are complex and believable. The twist with the title was awesome and I loved the primary character. The twists with who was the true antagonist was very compelling. I don't like to describe the plots of books in my reviews but if you like smart reading that does not have to force feed action to be entertaining then give this a true.
There are two girls here. They are both superheroines. One can manipulate iron and fly at the speed of light. The other uses emitted odors to control everyone. Their father can read and control minds. He is trying to bring about world peace. Nobody can't be seen by anybody but the girls and their father. He must make a choice and it's a thrilling ride getting there.
Richard Rogers is an everybody he works at a nondescript job, tries stand-up comedy as a hobby, and is having marital problems. One morning, he wakes up in a world where no one can see or hear him, and after being discovered by super-scientist Dr. Know, he finds himself fighting evil alongside nubile super-heroine-sisters Rail Blade and The Thrill. But in his new life as Nobody, Richard finds that good and evil may not be so easy to identify. Will he make the right world-saving choices ... and get the (right) girl?

James Maxey's debut novel is, overall, a fun, fast read for fans of superhero comics and fiction. That said, the plot jumps around from idea to idea like a drug-crazed ferret, and so much happens so quickly that it's difficult to relate to or empathize with any of the characters. Maxey's writing is workmanlike at best, and I often found myself craving more fine or rich details. Having also just read Soon I Will Be Invincible by Austin Grossman, I'd recommend the latter over this book, as I found it a more comprehensive and better-written homage to the superhero genre.

Recommended as a library loan for fans of light superhero fiction. Two-and-a-half stars.
In the interests of full disclosure, I know James and there is a preview of my novel, Confessions of a D-List Supervillain, inside of the updated kindle version. I've had a signed copy up in my room for over a year now and finally got a chance read it (and the kindle version I purchased).

The story is well conceived. I've seen similar plot devices in recent books, but this book is roughly 10 years old, so kudos to the author for being a pioneer. Richard Rogers (Nobody) is an interesting enough character thrust into extraordinary circumstances. With his existence erased, his belief in himself is all that keeps him going - literally.

His winding hero's journey is what makes the book good. He's not some generic "Captain Whitebread" style character. He has moments of pettiness and makes questionable decisions. I like my characters to be flawed. The secondary characters could have used more fleshing out, but that's a minor quibble and didn't detract from my enjoyment of the story. I read it all in a little over a day. It's not a terribly long novel and provides a more than satisfactory reader experience for action and adventure fans.

I look forward to reading a copy of the follow up in this universe, Burn Baby Burn.
