A secret room in an obscure Atlanta museum has become the final resting place for its proprietor, whose dead body lies surrounded by an astonishing collection of Ancient Greek antiquities previously unknown to the archaeological world. But something is missing. Something large and shrouded in legend.
Now Deborah Miller, the museum’s curator, has to venture into a terrifying web of murder and intrigue as she attempts to expose the killers of her friend and mentor. To do so she must learn the strange and terrible truth about the tangled history of an ancient artifact that might yet unleash devastation on the world.
“This is exactly the kind of archaeological thriller I love--from its gripping opening on a battlefield in the waning days of World War II to its roaring finish. MASK OF ATREUS is rich and dramatic -- a compelling novel that will grip you in its swift, dark currents and sweep you over the falls… An outstanding novel.”
Douglas Preston
"THE MASK OF ATREUS is the perfect debut--a high octane thriller crammed full of long buried secrets, treacherous betrayals, jaw-dropping twists, and a healthy dash of romance. Deborah Miller is an engaging, sympathetic heroine, who you can't help but root for. Move over Michael Crichton---A.J. Hartley is right at your heels."
J.A. Konrath
“Intricate and absorbing”
Publishers Weekly
“A labyrinth of history and mystery.”
Steve Berry
“Absolutely spellbinding.”

The Mask of Atreus edition by AJ Hartley Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks
It isn't often that a book comes along with such a well written & full of surprises plot but this book certainly did that & more. The characters were well written & thoughtful the points made in the plot didn't hammer onto your head but more sneak up on you. I admit though I knew one of the bad guys from the beginning his part in the plot wasn't clear to me till the very end. The author took real history & made a story so believable that I was left thinking "I can see that." This author truly showed what we lose with a deadly obsession. My only complaint, a minor one, is that the heroine complained about her long legs & to my knowledge most men are crazy for women with long legs & who are tall! But as I said this is a minor complaint. This heroine was strong, tough, & always came back against the bad guys my kind of hero!
A very good read!

The Mask of Atreus edition by AJ Hartley Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews
If you like murder mysteries with international intrigue and a bit of WWII history then I think you'll like this story. No longer in print but available by ebook. I read it because I was to meet the author and wanted to see what he writes. Both introductions were favorable. Interesting guy and exciting unputdownable tale. Try it.
I have become an absolute fan. Even reading the books out of order, it is fabulous to experience characters of so much depth that you are excited to see them in the next book. Creating fun, exciting circumstances that blend history and excitement is a true gift, and I look forward to reading Mr. Hartley`s future works. For now I am going to check out his earlier works to see if they are as interesting as the works he has created for adults.
Read and enjoy!!
I read "The Mask of Atreus" over the course of about three days--I found it an incredibly engaging and addictive read, even after I had started putting the clues about the truth of the mask together. I thought the story was intriguing and just far enough into the realm of conspiracy theories to be exciting without making me roll my eyes. I thought Deborah Miller was an excellent protagonist--I particularly enjoyed Hartley's portrayal of her as a fiercely independent and powerful personality, while making her cognizant of her attraction to Bowers and her vanities in a way that didn't diminish her personality or level-headedness.
I just finished this book, and I enjoyed it, but not as much as the other reviewers did, apparently. The overall plot was interesting, but the characters lacked development. While the main character, Deborah Miller, did have some history that was revealed, I never felt any sort of connection to the character. The detail invested in her background did not result in an investment in the character or a real concern for her when in peril.
Additionally, the book suffers the misfortune of being published just before a movie adaptation of a blockbuster book which also begins with the head of a museum being found dead inside the museum.
While the story had the requisite amount of plot twists and intriguing historical ties, the two largest surprises were telegraphed and I suspected what would happen many chapters before the big reveals. The pacing of the book was somehow off, as well. The action scenes were present and were adequately described, but the thrill of the chases was absent.
All told, I did enjoy this book, and it had a number of original ideas, which is increasingly rare. The beginning was fascinating as a prelude to the modern plotline. I think this shows some real potential for author A.J. Hartley.
The Mask of Atreus is the second book I've read by A.J. Hartley. I liked it, but still was a bit disappointed because I really loved his book What Time Devours. This one is well-written, and I found most of the characters interesting. It made me wish I knew a little more about Greek mythology, but not enough that I will look for a book on the subject. There were a few too many curves in the story for my liking; by the end I was getting a bit impatient with the twists. But the lead character is well detailed, and I found her believable, other than wondering how I had missed that she was wealthy enough to take off on trips overseas with about 30 minutes consideration.
I really enjoyed reading this book; very suspenseful until the very end. I also very much liked the main character; it was refreshing to see a female main character that was not red-haired with blue eyes, a model's body and a Ph.D. in molecular biology. She was rather unattractive, but "with a smart mouth" and even smarter mind. I also loved the accurate description of today's Greece and Greeks along with the description of some of the most important archaeological sites. I am Greek by origin and travel there quite often, so congrats to the author for the accurate description.
I really enjoyed this book - I couldn't put it down. I gave it four stars only because of some annoying grammatical errors The most bothersome was that every time the word "passed" was used, the correct spelling would have been "past". There were a couple of missing words, usually an article like "and" or "the", but there were only 3 or 4 cases of that, as opposed to the (at least) 6 places where "passed" was misused.
The story was solid and the characters were believable. I have to say that I did not expect the sharp turn that the story took after Deborah returned from Greece. I had a feeling that there was something off about that lawyer, and the story became more intense because of the events around him. I Don't like to give away the story when I write a review, so I won't. Just read this book, especially if you like historical mysteries.
